Feeling the Fuel Pinch? Go Electric with Oly Novated Leasing
2:40 minute read
Fretting over fuel prices? It might be time to join the growing numbers of Aussies who’ve switched to EVs - cutting the fuel pump stress and giving their wallets a well-deserved break.
Aussie drivers are feeling the sting at the bowser lately, coughing up about $90 a week on petrol*... that’s over $4,500 a year just to keep the tank happy!
Meanwhile, EV drivers are cruising on a very different budget – about $500 a year or roughly $10 a week to drive 12,000km**.
So, by switching to electric you could be getting around $4,000 back in your pocket every year – and the gap’s only going to get bigger from here!
Spend less and drive more
EVs aren’t just for the big spenders — they’re a smart, planet-friendly way for Aussies to cruise around while keeping their wallet happy.
“For years, EVs were seen as something only the wealthy could afford. But what we’re seeing now is a shift in who’s buying them, and why,” Oly CEO Antonia Albanese says. “It’s people who aren’t chasing status or making an environmental statement, but who simply want to make their budgets go further.”
The Electric Vehicle Council shows EV drivers are quietly winning with around seven in 10 saving more than 60% on fuel compared to their old petrol car, with a similar number spending less than $300 a year on maintenance.
And it gets better. The EV Council has also found that on the back of our fast-growing charging network – in 2025 there was a 20% increase in public-charger locations and 22% rise in high powered plugs – drivers’ concerns over range tend to disappear.
An electric car for a petrol car cost? Oly makes it EV-peasy
There’s also a handy leg-up from the Government’s Electric Car (EV) Discount, which means eligible EVs are free from Fringe Benefits Tax (up to the Luxury Car Tax threshold of $91,387). The catch? This perk is only unlocked with a novated lease.
The EV discount means p drivers with a novated lease can now use 100% pre-tax dollars to cover their EV and most running costs. That means the monthly cost on some electric cars ends up pretty much the same as a petrol car. Who knew saving the planet could be so wallet-friendly?
Since the Discount kicked off back in December 2022, the number of EV models available in Australia has skyrocketed from 56 to over 160 – and new car sales have surged too, jumping from around 2% to over 12% by the end of 2025. *MMS data
